任大寬（關(guān)德興 飾）家道興旺，四世同堂，但家家有本難念的經(jīng)，這一家也不例外。大兒子求富（黃百鳴 飾）與老婆月容（馮寶寶 飾）爭(zhēng)吵不斷，處在離婚的邊緣。二兒子求貴（梁家輝 飾）天生口吃，與老爸不和，年紀(jì)不小卻還沒有女朋友。小兒子求其年少無知，卻調(diào)皮搗蛋，在學(xué)校里惹事不斷。三女兒求安（毛舜筠 飾）天性叛逆，在法國留學(xué)后更是一發(fā)不可收拾。這一天，求安從法國帶來一個(gè)長發(fā)不羈的羅伯特（張國榮 飾），讓表哥孝忠（劉青云 飾）醋意大起。與此同時(shí)，訓(xùn)導(dǎo)主任何守貞（鄭裕玲 飾）發(fā)現(xiàn)求其的漫畫，要求見家長。而求貴愛上了守潔（袁詠儀 飾），兩人日漸親密，卻被守潔姐姐守貞百般阻攔……
